Piedmont (Piemonte) is a perfect destination for keen photographers. The region is full of detail - snow capped mountains, vine covered hills, beautiful towns and cities overflowing with elaborate architecture, fascinating people.. the list goes on.
I really wish I had more time to get out and capture my surroundings but what I have done, is shared the locations. You will no doubt do a lot better than me with your camera but I hope these location suggestions will at least act as a base from which to work and encourage you to visit our beautiful region.
Photo 2. MONFORTE D'ALBA LANGHE, PIEDMONT
Take from the town of Monforte d'Alba just as the sun was going down. The view is of Novello with Monviso in the background. It was in November 2006 and the weather perfect.
Monforte has lots of perfect views. Take the road up above the main town for some fantastic view points.
Photo 3. MANGO LANGHE, PIEDMONT
I know this isn't a great photo but I like it - the colours were so incredible - and the location is perfect for photographer.
Take the road south from Mango (Langhe) towards Cossano Belbo and you can't go wrong. This was taken on the 'flat' road about 1.5km from mango. I waited about an hour for the light to soften but it never got perfect. It was taken on the 20th June 2005. The camera was a non-SLR Nikon (don't remember what it was called..).
Photo 4. BOSSOLASCO LANGHE, PIEDMONT
The Langhe in Piedmont is always amazing (apart from the winter fog they sometimes get!) but this Saturday afternoon was perfection. I had just met with a client and was rushing home but could not resist pulling over to take this shot.
It was on the road between Bossolasco and Serravalle Langhe. The Alps appeared to be resting on the clouds above the flat plain south of Turin - a trully incredible sight. The view was looking west. Camera - Nikon D2x, Sigma 150mm lens. Dec2006.
Photo 5. MURAZZANO LANGHE, PIEDMONT
The Alta Langhe (High Langhe) has wonderful scenery all year round. The area doesn't have vineyards which can look a little bleak in the winter.
This was on the road just outside Murazzano. It runs between there and Marsaglia. Camera - Nikon D2x, Nikon 28mm lens. Nov2008. I didn't have time to set up a tripod so it could have been better.
Photo 6. TREZZO TINELLA LANGHE, PIEDMONT
This was taken with a pocket digital camera which proves location is everything really.. The road runs from Trezzo Tinella to S. Rocco Sano d'Elvo (close to Treiso). It's beautiful and what convinced me I had to move out of Turin into this area.
It was May 2004. You may find in the Summer that the vines block the view.
Photo7. BENEVELLO LANGHE, PIEDMONT
This is my most stolen photo - morons just keep helping themselves.. I was heading home after a long day in the Langhe and the light was spot on. I stopped in two places down this road and the lower point was the best. Get there for sunset or early morning.
The roads runs down from Benevello to Alba. The view is of Diano d'Alba with Monviso in the background. 150mm lens again. Needs a little work in photoshop to get balanced.
Photo 8. CISTERNA D'ASTI, ROERO PIEDMONT
The villa of Cisterna d'Asti. The view is from my village - Saretto, Asti.
I admit to putting a couple of colour layers on it but I still like the result. The hills in the background are the Langhe. 100 year ago this area of the Roero was all vineyards and 2000 years ago sea! The valleys are very deep and dramatic so great to photograph. The views from Cisterna are just as good as Tuscany.
